“The sailing club, now well into its
stride, grew rapidly. For one month every year, August, it
became the point of Trearddur Bay, and claimed our whole
attention: the related activities which grew up round it –
the races round to Holyhead or to Rhoscolyn, the sailing
picnics, the swimming and rowing regatta, the committee
meetings, the dances and parties – bound us all together in
a lively routine, of which racing was the exciting climax.
…………………….. The background organisation of the club became
more and more complicated: with a fleet which increased
rapidly to 8 Half-Raters, 13 Myths, and 20 Insects, the
mooring problems became acute and demanded a separate
Moorings’ Committee …………………… . There was also the General
Committee, the Sailing Committee, and the Dance Committee.
……………….
Perhaps it was the start of each new
season, with its renewed promise of improving on the last
one and of having a grand time anyway, which was the best
fun of all.”

Brother Denys’ by Nicholas Monsarrat, published 1948

Dear
Member,
The
sailing season is now fast approaching and it is time to
check the boats ensuring that all the shackles and ropes are
still there!
You will
have seen from the Newsletter that the Committee and
volunteer Members have organised the usual full programme of
activities and I hope you are all able to participate in as
many as possible. I draw your attention to the social events
outlined on pages 12 to 15 of the Newsletter – in particular
the new look Ball and the Rhoscolyn Sail and Picnic.
Additionally, new this year are the Saturday
lunchtime Burgee gatherings, the lunchtime social at
Holyhead Sailing Club between the offshore races on Sunday
the 10th, the Beach Cricket and the Copper Mines Barbeque.
Trustees
At the November Committee meeting it was
decided that it was an appropriate time to plan for the
succession of the Club’s Trustees. Subsequent to that
meeting, and agreed at our extra Committee meeting in
February, a group of members was identified for the role of
Trustee. These members were approached over the following
weeks and have agreed to act as Trustees of the Club. I am
grateful that they have accepted and they are all delighted
and honoured to have been asked.
Briefly,
as the Club is not a legal entity, it is not able to hold
assets directly. Trustees accept responsibility for nominal
ownership of Club assets held on trust for the benefit of
the members of the Club. In turn the trustees are
indemnified by the Club. Trustees have no constitutional
position in running the Club’s affairs and have no greater
influence than any other member.
Peter
Davis, Tony Crook, Jonathan Strong and Japes Withinshaw have
been Trustees of the Trearddur Bay Sailing Club for 13 years
– a very long period for anyone to be asked to hold this
position.
This period has seen the re-building of the
sea wall in Porth Diana, dinghy park & slipway improvements
and, not least, the Boatyard re-development.
I would
like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Committee
and the membership, to thank the retiring Trustees for the
strong support they have given to the Club over the years.
A
resolution of Appointment of Trustees will be put to the
Committee at our next meeting in July and if passed by the
Committee a notice will be put on the notice boards
informing you of the new Trustees.
